Engagement Season Is Here — And the #1 Question Isn't About Price
A guide to picking the perfect location for your engagement session — and how Chris Gocklin Photography can help.

Every year around this time, my inbox starts filling up with messages from newly engaged couples. They're excited, a little overwhelmed, and almost always asking the same thing — not about pricing, not about packages, but about location. "Where should we go for our engagement photos?"
It's honestly one of my favorite questions to answer, because it's the one that matters most. The location you choose sets the entire tone for your session — the mood, the light, the feeling when you look back at those images years from now. And it's a decision that doesn't have to be stressful. In fact, it should be fun.
So if you're a newly engaged couple in New Jersey or the surrounding area wondering where to even begin — this one's for you.

Location Is Everything (No, Really)
Engagement sessions are a chance to tell the beginning of your story. They're the preview — a glimpse into who you are as a couple before the big day. And nothing communicates that more powerfully than where you choose to be photographed.
A couple who met at the Jersey Shore will feel completely at home with waves crashing in the background. A couple who loves hiking might gravitate toward the moody forests and rock formations of the Delaware Water Gap. A city-at-heart duo might love the gritty charm of a downtown street at golden hour. There's no wrong answer — but there is a location that's perfect for you specifically. The goal is finding it.
The backdrop of your engagement photos will shape how these images feel forever. A little intentionality up front goes a very long way.

Local Knowledge Makes a Difference
After years of photographing couples all across New Jersey and the surrounding region, I've built up an honest, first-hand knowledge of venues, parks, preserves, and permitted locations throughout the area. I know which spots have the best light in the late afternoon. I know which parks require permits — and how to get them — and which locations are completely open and free to shoot at. I know where the crowds tend to be, and more importantly, where they aren't.
That kind of local scouting experience means you're not showing up somewhere that'll be packed with Saturday hikers, or discovering on the day of your session that the

garden you loved on Instagram requires a permit you didn't know about. We handle that planning together — well before your session ever happens.
Whether you're dreaming of rolling farmland, a waterfront at sunset, a charming small-town main street, or the lush gardens of a private estate — there's almost certainly a spot within reach that checks every box. Sometimes the best locations are the ones you'd never think to Google.

Not Sure Where — or Even When — to Ask?
You don't need to have it all figured out before reaching out. That's literally what I'm here for.
I offer completely free consultations — a real conversation, no sales pitch, no pressure to book on the spot. If you want to talk through location ideas, timing, style, or even just what an engagement session actually looks like start to finish, I'm happy to sit down (virtually or in person) and walk through all of it with you.
My job during a consultation isn't to sell you something. It's to help you figure out if we're the right fit, and to make sure that if we do work together, we're starting from the best possible foundation. If you leave a consultation with great ideas and end up booking someone else, that's genuinely fine with me. I just want you to feel informed and excited — not rushed or pressured.

Oh, and One More Thing — Your Engagement Session Is Already Included
If you're already considering Chris Gocklin Photography for your wedding day, here's something worth knowing: every engagement session is included with all full event packages.

Not as an add-on. Not at a discounted rate. Included. Full stop.
There's a practical reason for this beyond just the photos themselves: your engagement session is also the best possible chance for us to get to know each other before the wedding. By the time your big day comes around, you'll already feel completely comfortable in front of my camera. You'll know how I work, how I communicate, and how I direct. That comfort shows up in every single frame on your wedding day — and it's something you genuinely can't replicate any other way.
Think of the engagement session as both a gift and a warm-up. You'll walk away with beautiful images from this chapter of your story — and you'll walk into your wedding day as a pro.

So, What's the Next Step?
If you're engaged — or even just getting close — don't wait until you have everything figured out to reach out. The best time to start the conversation is now, especially as spring and summer dates fill up quickly.

Send me a message. Tell me a little about yourselves, where you're thinking, and what you're hoping for. If you have no idea yet — that's perfectly fine too. We'll figure it out together.
Consultations are free. The conversation is easy. And your engagement session is already waiting for you. 🤍
